Standard and insulated vinyl siding, hung to move with Worcester's freeze-thaw cycles
Call (508) 691-9105 NowVinyl is the most common siding on Worcester houses for good reason: it never needs paint, it shrugs off road salt spray and snowbanks better than bare wood, and it comes in profiles that suit everything from a Burncoat ranch to a Tatnuck colonial. What separates a vinyl job that lasts from one that rattles loose after two winters is almost entirely in how it is hung.
Vinyl expands and contracts noticeably between a February night and a July afternoon. Every panel is nailed in the center of its slot and left loose enough to slide, with room at the corners and J-channel so it can move without buckling. Behind it goes a weather-resistive barrier and proper flashing at every window, door and roof-wall joint, because vinyl sheds most water but was never meant to be the only line of defense.
If you are weighing vinyl against wood or fiber cement for a period home, we are happy to talk through the tradeoffs, and our clapboard repair service is there when keeping the original wood makes more sense.
Walk the house, check the sheathing and measure every wall
Pick the panel, profile, color and trim package
Strip old siding, repair sheathing and install housewrap
Hang panels, trim and soffits, then clean up the site
Sometimes, if the old siding is flat and the sheathing behind it is dry. In most Worcester homes we recommend stripping it so we can see and fix what is underneath.
Vinyl becomes less flexible in deep cold, which is why we avoid installing it on the coldest days and why proper fastening matters so much.
It will not replace wall insulation, but the foam backer reduces some heat loss through the studs and makes the wall feel more solid.
